International developments: Nuclear fuel delays, Delhi pollution measures, and Saudi nuclear concerns

Uranium fuel intended for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh has faced delays after a cargo plane was denied permission to use Pakistani airspace. Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam confirmed the delay, noting that while preparations were complete at the airport, the flight scheduled for September 24 could not proceed. Russia’s Rosatom indicated that the fuel might arrive in early October.

In India, New Delhi is implementing strict measures to combat severe winter air pollution. Starting November 1, 50 percent of government and private sector employees will be directed to work from home. Additional restrictions include banning non-BS-VI compliant vehicles from entering the capital, doubling parking fees, and prohibiting construction activities between December 10 and January 20.

Meanwhile, a confidential U.S. intelligence report has raised concerns regarding Saudi Arabia’s nuclear ambitions. The report suggests that while no final decision to build nuclear weapons has been made, the kingdom has not ruled out the possibility. U.S. lawmakers are particularly concerned that existing civilian nuclear cooperation agreements could allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium to levels that significantly shorten the path to weapons-grade material.
