Sahra Wagenknecht challenges Björn Höcke to live debate

Sahra Wagenknecht, founder of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), has issued a public challenge to AfD leader Björn Höcke, proposing a live, unscripted debate with a neutral moderator. This follows Höcke's offer to support Wagenknecht's candidacy for Minister President of Thuringia with AfD votes, an offer she previously declined due to internal party conflicts.

Wagenknecht is advocating for a non-partisan Minister President in Thuringia to end the current 'firewall' policy that excludes the AfD from political participation. This comes amid significant political shifts in eastern Germany, including polling that suggests the AfD could achieve an absolute majority in Saxony-Anhalt.

Internal tensions are rising within the BSW. While the Thuringian state association voted unanimously to remain in its current coalition with the CDU and SPD, the federal leadership has called for an exit. Meanwhile, Thuringia's Interior Minister Georg Maier has proposed technical measures to block AfD access to certain intelligence data should the party enter government in Saxony-Anhalt.

Political experts, including former SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel, have expressed skepticism regarding the effectiveness of the current 'firewall' strategy, noting that the political divide in society continues to widen.
