Sahrawi refugee children receive medical and housing support in Spain
The ‘Vacaciones en Paz’ (Vacations in Peace) humanitarian program continues to support Sahrawi refugee children through various initiatives in Spain. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, approximately 50 children received free ophthalmological examinations at the Vithas Eurocanarias Instituto Oftalmológico. These screenings aim to detect eye pathologies early, addressing health risks caused by the harsh environmental conditions in the Tindouf refugee camps, such as extreme temperatures, dust, and intense sun exposure.
In Galicia, the municipality of Nigrán has once again provided municipal housing in Balinfra to accommodate Sahrawi monitors. These monitors support children who face difficulties adapting to their host families. This year, 315 minors are participating in the program across Galicia, which allows them to spend the summer months away from the difficult living conditions of the refugee camps. The Nigrán City Council also provides an annual direct subsidy of 2,500 euros to support the initiative.
