SAIC Motor plant in Ferrol sparks Spanish security concerns
SAIC Motor has selected the port of Ferrol in Galicia, Spain, for its first European electric vehicle assembly plant. The project involves an initial investment of approximately 200 million euros, with construction planned for 2027 and operations beginning in 2028. The facility is expected to create up to 1,000 direct jobs during its first phase.
The announcement has triggered security alerts from Spain's Ministry of Defense and the National Intelligence Centre (CNI). Officials have expressed concerns regarding potential industrial espionage due to the plant's proximity—approximately five kilometers—to the Ferrol military arsenal and Navantia shipyards. These sites are strategic hubs for the Spanish Navy, housing F-100 frigates and the development of F-110 class vessels, which utilize advanced U.S. technology.
In response, the Spanish government and the Xunta de Galicia have defended the project, calling it a strategic industrial opportunity. Minister Óscar López has called for 'absolute tranquility,' asserting that the investment is compatible with national security and that all necessary safeguards and conditions can be established to mitigate risks. Navantia and the Navy have indicated intentions to reinforce protection systems against cyberattacks and electronic espionage.
