SAIC Motor to build first European EV plant in Ferrol, Spain

SAIC Motor, the Chinese manufacturer behind the MG brand, plans to establish its first European industrial complex in the outer port of Ferrol, Galicia. The project involves an initial investment of approximately 200 million euros and is expected to create 1,000 direct jobs in its first phase. Long-term goals include expanding production capacity to 120,000 vehicles per year.

The Galician government has designated the development as a Strategic Industrial Project to expedite administrative and permitting processes. The plan also includes an industrial park in Mandiá to host suppliers and a logistics center in As Pontes, which could provide an additional 300 jobs. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with production starting in 2028.

However, the project has drawn scrutiny from the Spanish Ministry of Defense and national intelligence services. Concerns have been raised regarding the facility's proximity to sensitive naval sites, including the Spanish Navy's arsenal and Navantia shipyards, which are currently involved in major naval programs such as the F-110 frigate construction.
