MG/SAIC to build first European EV plant in Galicia, Spain

Chinese automaker SAIC Motor, owner of the MG brand, will construct its first European electric‑vehicle factory in the Galicia region of north‑west Spain, between Ferrol and As Pontes. The project, announced by regional president Alfonso Rueda, involves an initial investment of about €200 million, with construction slated to start in 2027 and production expected by the end of 2028.

The plant will have an annual capacity of 120,000 vehicles and is projected to create roughly 2,300 jobs – about 2,000 direct positions and additional indirect roles. It will host manufacturing, research‑and‑development and logistics functions, helping MG bypass EU anti‑dumping duties on Chinese‑origin EVs and reinforcing the “In Europe, for Europe” strategy.

MG, now one of the best‑selling Chinese brands in Spain, aims to use the facility as a hub for European supply chains, battery‑technology development and collaborations with local suppliers and research institutes, strengthening Spain’s automotive sector and its EU‑wide emissions targets.
