SAIC to build MG assembly plant in Ferrol, Spain

Chinese auto group SAIC will invest around €200 million to open an MG assembly facility in Ferrol, north‑western Spain. The plant will employ roughly 2,000 workers and aim for an annual capacity of up to 120,000 vehicles, primarily electric and plug‑in hybrid models. Components will arrive from China as completely knocked‑down (CKD) kits for local assembly, allowing the venture to avoid the 45.3 % EU import tariff on Chinese‑built cars.

The regional government, represented by President Alfonso Rueda, confirmed the project and highlighted the strategic use of Ferrol’s port and nearby As Pontes logistics hub. SAIC is also collaborating with the CIFP Ferrolterra vocational‑training centre to source skilled staff, with the centre expecting a surge in enrolments as the plant prepares to staff both the initial assembly phase and future manufacturing activities.
