SAIC to open €197 million electric‑vehicle plant in Ferrol, creating 1,000 direct jobs

China's SAIC Motor Corporation will invest nearly €197 million to build an electric and hybrid vehicle manufacturing complex at the outer port of Ferrol in Galicia, Spain. The facility will cover more than 100,500 m², have an annual capacity of about 120,000 vehicles and will create roughly 1,000 direct positions – about 540 on the production line and 460 in logistics. The project is labelled a Strategic Industrial Project by the regional government and is expected to generate up to 2,000 jobs across Galicia when indirect employment in supplier and service chains is included.

The plant is part of a broader re‑industrialisation plan that could extend to As Pontes, where additional component‑maker facilities may add over 300 more jobs. Officials say the investment will diversify Ferrol’s historically naval‑focused economy, boost activity at the Port of Ferrol, and reinforce Galicia’s role in Spain’s automotive sector alongside the existing Stellantis plant in Vigo. Expected economic spill‑overs include higher tax revenues, increased demand for housing and services, and a stronger position in the European electric‑vehicle market.
