Saigon Zoo announces death of white lion Mimi
Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens announced the death of Mimi, a white lion that had lived at the facility for nearly 16 years. Mimi passed away at approximately 18 years of age following intensive treatment for multi-organ failure related to old age.
Mimi was one of two white lions brought to the zoo from South Africa in July 2010. The pair, which included a male named Mino, arrived at the age of 18 months and weighed approximately 120 kg each. The lions were known for their friendly temperament and unique appearance, which is caused by a rare recessive gene rather than albinism.
In the weeks leading up to her death, Mimi had shown signs of declining health and loss of appetite. Veterinary doctors, in coordination with experts and the Ho Chi Minh City Veterinary Department, conducted consultations to manage her condition, but she ultimately succumbed to her illness. The zoo has stated that her remains will be handled according to internal technical procedures following a leadership meeting.
