Sail jellyfish discovered off the coast of Sylt

Sail jellyfish, a species typically found in warm subtropical and tropical waters such as the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, have been discovered washed up on the coast of Sylt in the North Sea. According to the Schutzstation Wattenmeer, this marks the first recorded instance of this species in Germany.

The swarm reportedly traveled from the Atlantic via Scotland and the Danish west coast to reach Sylt. While these jellyfish are considered harmless to humans, marine biologist Rainer Borcherding notes that their presence serves as an indicator of warming sea temperatures due to climate change. He warned that as waters continue to heat up, more dangerous species, such as the Portuguese man o' war or the Mediterranean mauve stinger, could also appear in the region.
