SailWise catamaran Beatrix suffers mast failure on IJsselmeer
The catamaran Beatrix, operated by the watersports organization SailWise, suffered a mast failure while sailing on the IJsselmeer last weekend. The vessel, which provides sailing opportunities for people with disabilities, had originally planned to participate in the Kustzeilers 24-hour race but opted for a shorter daytime trip instead due to concerns over stormy weather.
While the incident occurred while crew members were on the foredeck, all passengers, volunteers, and crew members were safely moved to the rear of the boat and remained uninjured. The KNRM provided assistance to ensure everyone was safely brought to shore.
SailWise director Marijn Jenné noted that while the rigging appeared intact, the failure seems to have originated from a weak point in the custom-made aluminum mast. Because insurance may not cover the full cost of repairs, the organization has launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund a new mast and return the vessel to the water.
