Saima Wazed Putul resigns from WHO Southeast Asia leadership role

Saima Wazed Putul, the daughter of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has resigned from her position as the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Southeast Asia. Her resignation follows months of unpaid administrative leave and internal investigations into allegations of financial fraud, falsification of academic qualifications, and irregular land acquisition in Bangladesh.

While Wazed has contested the accusations, claiming she was being systematically sidelined, a WHO committee reportedly recommended her removal. Her departure marks an early end to a five-year mandate that was originally intended to run until 2029.

Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir criticized the appointment, describing it as ‘very unfortunate’ and a ‘shame’ for international organizations. Kobir alleged that Wazed lacked the necessary expertise and credentials, suggesting her position was secured due to her political connections rather than merit. He emphasized that international bodies must prioritize professional competence to avoid negative outcomes for the region.
