Adana earthquake: 5.0 magnitude tremor hits Saimbeyli
A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Saimbeyli district of Adana at 04:02, occurring at a depth of 7 kilometers. The tremor was felt across several neighboring provinces, including Kahramanmaraş, Osmaniye, Kayseri, and Gaziantep.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the Adana Governor's Office, no immediate reports of casualties, injuries, or significant property damage have been received. Field scanning operations are ongoing to ensure regional safety. Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi confirmed that teams remain on alert and no negative situations have been reported thus far.
Following the tremor, geologist Professor Osman Bektaş raised concerns regarding the Savrun Fault Zone. He noted that while many major faults in the Kahramanmaraş block ruptured during the 2023 earthquakes, the Savrun Fault remained unbroken. Bektaş highlighted that seismic activity in the Saimbeyli area has continued since 2023, suggesting the fault may be responding to new stress through fragmented ruptures rather than a single large event. He cautioned that while a major earthquake cannot be definitively predicted, the uncertainty regarding how 'locked' the fault remains means the danger has not passed.
