Sainsbury’s to continue facial recognition rollout after shoplifting error

Sainsbury’s is proceeding with plans to roll out Facewatch facial recognition technology to approximately 200 stores during 2026, following a controversial incident at an East Dulwich branch in London. The retailer faced scrutiny after a customer, Matt Arnold, was wrongly accused of shoplifting and escorted from the premises while using a self-service checkout.

Both Sainsbury’s and the technology provider, Facewatch, have attributed the incident to human error rather than technical failure. A Sainsbury’s spokesperson stated that the system maintains a “99.98% accuracy rate” and that every match is reviewed by a trained manager. Facewatch echoed this, claiming a “correct alert was sent to the retailer” but was mishandled by on-site staff.

Despite the outcry, Sainsbury’s defended the technology, citing pilot trials that reportedly reduced theft and antisocial behavior by 46%. The company apologized to the customer and provided a goodwill voucher, which the individual subsequently donated to a local food bank.
