Saint Alexander Nevsky feast day observed by Orthodox believers
The Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers are observing the feast day of the Transfer of the Relics of Saint Alexander Nevsky. Alexander Nevsky, a prominent Russian prince and son of Prince Yaroslav, is revered across Slavic Orthodox nations as a symbol of the preservation of Orthodoxy.
Historical records note that Nevsky became the Prince of Novgorod in 1236 after defeating the Swedes on the Neva River. He was known for his piety and his defense of the faith against external pressures. He eventually took monastic vows under the name Alexie before passing away on November 14, 1263, at the age of 43.
In Serbia, the saint is particularly honored by certain families, notably near Kragujevac. Historical ties include King Alexander Karađorđević, who regarded the saint as his protector, leading to the construction of a church in Belgrade's Dorćol district during the 1930s.
