Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Andrew and Prophet Samuel
The Orthodox Church commemorates several significant religious figures on August 19 and 20.
On August 19, the Church honors Saint Andrew the Stratilates and 2,593 Christian martyrs. Andrew, a Roman military officer during the reign of Maximian, is remembered for his bravery and for leading his soldiers toward Christianity despite the persecutions of the era. The day also commemorates Saint Theophanes of Naousa, a 16th-century monk and wonderworker from Ioannina.
On August 20, the feast day focuses on the Prophet Samuel, a central figure in the Old Testament who served as a prophet and judge for the people of Israel, famously anointing Kings Saul and David. Other commemorations include the thirty-seven martyrs of Bizye, Saint Theocharis of Neapolis, and the Saints Rhinos and Oreste, who were martyred in Cyprus.
Additionally, August 20 is recognized globally as World Mosquito Day, marking the anniversary of Ronald Ross's 1897 discovery regarding the transmission of malaria.
