Saint Angelina of Serbia commemorated

Today marks the commemoration of Saint Angelina of Serbia, a medieval figure known for her wisdom and resilience. Born Angelina Branković, she was the daughter of Gjergj Arianiti and the wife of Stefan Branković, son of Despot Đurađ Branković.

Her life was marked by significant hardship, including exile and poverty in Italy and Albania. She outlived her husband, two sons, and a daughter. Despite these struggles, she was a patron of numerous monasteries and spent her later years in prayer. Following her death in 1520, her remains were moved to the Krušedol Monastery, which was later destroyed by Ottoman forces in 1716.

In Serbian tradition, Saint Angelina is revered as a protector of the poor and oppressed. Her cult emerged as early as the 16th century, and she remains a central figure in the iconography of the Branković martyr family.
