Saint Areta and the Martyrdom of Negran
The historical account of Saint Areta, a Christian leader of the city of Negran in the region of modern-day Yemen, details a period of intense persecution in the early 6th century. During the reign of Emperor Justin I in Constantinople, the local ruler Danaan, a Jewish leader, initiated a campaign against Christians.
After being defeated in war by the Ethiopian King Elesbaan, Danaan broke a peace treaty and attacked the Christian population. He gained entry to the fortified city of Negran by making a false oath, promising not to cause harm if the gates were opened for tax collection. Once inside, Danaan executed 427 clergy members and pursued the martyrdom of Areta, his wife Reuma, their two daughters, and other citizens who refused to renounce their faith.
Following these events, King Elesbaan of Ethiopia defeated Danaan and placed the city of Negran under the administration of Arian, the son of Areta.
