Saint Augustine of Hippo's religious conversion

Augustine of Hippo, one of the most prominent saints, underwent a significant religious transformation after a life characterized by intellectual pursuits and diverse interests. A skilled rhetorician and teacher, Augustine spent nearly a decade following Manichaeism, a sect defined by radical dualism.

A pivotal moment in his conversion occurred in Milan around 384 AD, when he took a position as a professor of rhetoric. While initially attending the sermons of Bishop Ambrose to evaluate his oratorical skills, Augustine found himself drawn to both the form and the substance of the teachings. Ambrose’s interpretations of the Scriptures helped dismantle Augustine’s skepticism, leading him to renounce his previous lifestyle and dedicate himself to religious service and the pursuit of wisdom.
