Saint Clare of Assisi celebrations held in Brazil and Mexico

Communities in Brazil and Mexico are holding traditional celebrations in honor of Saint Clare of Assis.

In Caucaia, Brazil, the community of Santa Clara de Assis is observing a festival running from August 2 to August 11. Under the theme ‘The love of Christ united us,’ the event focuses on Franciscan spirituality, drawing inspiration from the lives of Saint Clare and Saint Francis of Assis. The local parish priest, Father Levi Campos, described the community's collective effort as a spiritual experience of multiplication and gratitude.

In Santa Clara Coatitla, Ecatepec, residents celebrated patron saint festivities through the creation of multicolored sawdust carpets. This tradition, which began in 1994, involves neighbors using molds, paint, and dyed sawdust to create geometric figures, flowers, and religious symbols on the streets. The procession includes music from mariachis and wind instruments, with local women known as ‘Las Azucenas’ assisting in the movement of the religious image. Organizers emphasize the importance of involving younger generations to ensure the continuity of this artisanal expression.
