Bally Bagayoko shields students from police during French protests

Bally Bagayoko, the mayor of Saint-Denis and a member of the La France Insoumise party, has gained international attention after being filmed interposing himself between police and student protesters in Paris. During the demonstration, Bagayoko shouted for officers to stop and step back to protect the students, during which he was also struck by tear gas.

The protests, which have been ongoing for over two weeks, are driven by student demands for improved educational conditions, including addressing overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and inadequate facilities. The unrest has led to more than 6,000 arrests and dozens of injuries among students. While human rights organizations and unions have accused police of using excessive force, including the use of rubber projectiles and tear gas, authorities report that hundreds of police officers have also been injured during the unrest.

Bagayoko has faced political criticism for comments suggesting that violence can sometimes be legitimate, leading to reports being sent to prosecutors regarding his conduct. He has since called on President Emmanuel Macron to apologize to the families of injured students.
