Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Diomedes on August 16
Sunday, August 16, marks several religious commemorations in the Orthodox Church. The feast day honors Saint Diomedes, a physician from Tarsus who practiced medicine charitably and preached the Gospel before being martyred during the Diocletian persecution.
Other saints commemorated include Saint Alcibiades, Saint Gerasimos the New Ascetic of Kefalonia, Saint Stamatios of Volos, and Saint Apostle the New. The day also marks the finding of the holy relics of Saints Seraphim and Sarantis.
On the island of Chios, the Holy Church of Saint Diomedes in Mavropapoutsides celebrates its feast day. The historic church, built in 1743 by the Brotherhood of Mavropapoutsides, serves as a significant local landmark and is managed by the Association of Shoemakers and Shopkeepers of Chios.
