Saint Evaristus commemorated as Pope and martyr

The Catholic liturgical calendar commemorates Saint Evaristus, a second-century Pope and martyr of Greek origin and Jewish descent. Following the pontificate of Saint Clement I, Evaristus led the Church during a period of intense imperial persecution under Emperor Trajan.

Historical traditions credit Evaristus with significant organizational reforms, including dividing Rome into parishes to better serve the growing community of believers. He also established the presence of seven deacons to assist the bishop in preaching and liturgical duties.

During his leadership, he worked to preserve doctrinal purity against early Gnostic heresies and emphasized works of charity for those in need. Evaristus eventually faced martyrdom, enduring imprisonment and execution for his faith, and is currently venerated as a patron for parish priests and ecclesiastical administrators.
