Saint Firmin: The missionary bishop and martyr of Amiens
Saint Firmin, the first bishop of Amiens, is commemorated as a missionary and martyr. Tradition holds that he was born in Pamplona, in Roman Hispania, to a high-ranking family and later dedicated his life to spreading the Christian faith.
Firmin traveled through various regions of Gaul before arriving in Samarobriva, known today as Amiens. There, he established an early Christian community. His missionary work led to his arrest by Roman authorities; he was subsequently imprisoned and executed by decapitation for refusing to renounce his faith. His martyrdom is traditionally dated to the late 3rd or early 4th century.
His legacy remains significant in both France and Spain. While he is a patron saint of Amiens, his origins in Navarre have also fostered a strong devotional tradition in Pamplona, where he is celebrated annually.
