Saint Francis of Assisi and the legacy of Jacopa de’ Settesoli

The historical relationship between Saint Francis of Assisi and Jacopa de’ Settesoli is highlighted through the lens of their deep spiritual friendship and the tradition of the mostaccioli dessert.

Jacopa de’ Settesoli, a Roman noblewoman and widow, became a close confidante of Saint Francis around 1210. Despite the era's strict gender separations, Francis affectionately referred to her as ‘Frate Jacopa’ (Brother Jacopa) to honor her spiritual strength and to allow her access to monastic spaces typically restricted to men.

During his stays in Rome, Jacopa provided hospitality and care for the Saint. A notable tradition involves mostaccioli, a sweet made of almonds, sugar or honey, and grape must, which Francis reportedly enjoyed. According to Franciscan accounts, as Francis lay dying at the Porziuncola in October 1226, he requested that Jacopa be summoned to bring him burial garments, candles, and his favorite sweets. Legend states she arrived at the convent with these items even before his messenger could reach her.
