Saint Francis of Assisi legacy commemorated 800 years after death
Eight hundred years after the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, his teachings on peace, forgiveness, and fraternity continue to influence both believers and non-believers globally. Born in Assisi, Italy, around 1181 or 1182 to a wealthy cloth merchant, Francis initially sought military glory and social recognition.
Following his capture during the war between Assisi and Perugia in 1202 and subsequent illness, he underwent a profound spiritual transformation. He renounced his family wealth to dedicate his life to the poor, the sick, and the protection of animals, advocating that human differences should not be grounds for hatred.
His message of understanding and peace, often expressed through his greeting “Peace and good,” has spread from Italy to the rest of the world. His life and legacy were recently highlighted during his religious feast day on October 4.
