Saint Gregory the Illuminator commemorated by the Orthodox Church
The Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Gregory the Illuminator, Bishop of Greater Armenia, on September 30. Known as the Apostle to the Armenians, Gregory played a decisive role in the conversion of Armenia to Christianity during the 3rd and 4th centuries.
According to religious tradition, Gregory was persecuted by King Tiridates III for his Christian faith. He was cast into a deep pit, known as Khor Virap, where he survived for approximately 14 to 15 years, reportedly aided by a pious widow who secretly brought him food. The tradition states that the King eventually suffered from mental illness and was healed through Gregory's prayers, leading to his baptism and the widespread adoption of Christianity across the Armenian nation.
In addition to Saint Gregory, the feast day honors several other figures, including Saints Ripsime, Gaiane, and Stratonicus. The commemoration remains a significant event in the liturgical calendars of both the Orthodox and Armenian Churches.
