Saint John of Capestrano commemorated for religious and military legacy

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Saint John of Capestrano on October 23, honoring the Franciscan friar, preacher, and reformer. Born in Capestrano, Abruzzo, in 1386, John originally pursued a legal career in Perugia, serving as a city governor before a period of imprisonment led to his religious conversion.

As a member of the Order of Friars Minor, he became a key figure in the Observant reform movement and a close collaborator of Saint Bernardino of Siena. He was a prolific preacher across Italy and Central Europe, including Germany, Bohemia, and Poland, where he worked to defend Catholic doctrine and reform the clergy.

John is notably remembered for his role in the 1456 defense of Belgrade against the Ottoman Empire. Sent by Pope Callixtus III to mobilize a crusade, he supported the defenders alongside John Hunyadi. The successful defense of the city marked a significant moment for Christian Europe. He died in Ilok on October 23, 1456, and was canonized in 1690.
