Saint John of Rila honored by the Orthodox Church

The Orthodox Church honors Saint John of Rila, a central figure in Bulgarian spirituality and the founder of Bulgarian monasticism. Born around 867 near modern-day Dupnitsa, he is regarded as the patron saint of the Bulgarian people.

After dedicating his life to prayer and asceticism, Saint John retreated to the Rila Mountains, living in caves and rock niches. His reputation for miracles and spiritual guidance drew many followers, including peasants seeking healing and disciples seeking monastic instruction. He is famously associated with the founding of the Rila Monastery.

Historical accounts and legends describe his interactions with Bulgarian rulers, such as Tsar Peter I, and emphasize his commitment to humility and poverty. His legacy remains a significant part of Orthodox tradition and Bulgarian cultural identity.
