Saint John the Evangelist feast day observed by Serbian Orthodox Church

On October 9, the Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers observe the feast day of Saint John the Evangelist, one of Christ’s most significant disciples. Known as the “apostle of love,” John is credited with writing the Gospel of John, three Epistles, and the Book of Revelation.

In Serbian tradition, the day is accompanied by various folk customs and beliefs regarding household protection and domestic tasks. Historically, women were advised to avoid sewing or using needles and scissors on this day. This tradition was rooted in the practical belief that such activities might attract pests, specifically mice, which could damage clothing, wool, and bedding within the home.

While the religious observance commemorates his repose, the day is also marked by these cultural practices intended to ensure a peaceful household and the protection of domestic goods.
