Saint Joseph of Cupertino: The flying friar and patron of students

Saint Joseph of Cupertino, a 17th-century Italian Franciscan friar, is recognized for his extraordinary mystical experiences, most notably reported instances of levitation. Born in 1603 in Puglia, Italy, into a poor family, he faced significant academic difficulties and was initially considered unfit for the priesthood due to his slow learning and lack of manual dexterity.

Despite these challenges, he was ordained a priest in 1628. He became famous for his intense spiritual ecstasies, during which witnesses claimed he would physically rise above the ground. One notable account suggests he levitated in the presence of Pope Urban VIII.

Due to his history of academic struggles, he is venerated as the patron saint of students and exam candidates. Additionally, his reputation for levitation has led to him being regarded as the patron saint of aviation and cosmonauts.
