Saint Kassiani: Byzantine hymnographer commemorated by the Church

The Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Kassiani on September 7. A 9th-century nun, poet, and one of the most significant hymnographers of the Byzantine Empire, she lived in Constantinople during the era of Iconoclasm.

Kassiani is widely recognized for her liturgical contributions, most notably the hymn ‘Kyrie, η εν πολλαίς αμαρτίαις περιπεσούσα γυνή’, which is chanted on Holy Friday. She remains one of the few female creators from the Byzantine period whose works have been preserved under her own name and continue to be used in religious worship.

Tradition also links her to a famous encounter with Emperor Theophilus around the year 830. According to Byzantine lore, during a selection process for a bride, the Emperor made a remark regarding the fall of Eve, to which Kassiani responded by referencing the Virgin Mary. While this romanticized account is a staple of tradition, historical certainty regarding the specific circumstances of the imperial selection remains unknown.
