Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche preserves historic crystal heritage

The village of Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche is centered around its historic crystal manufacture, which has been located in the Münzthal valley since 1586. As the oldest crystalworks in France and Europe, the site currently employs approximately 300 people. Following a period of decline in the 1980s and 1990s, the manufacture was acquired by Hermès in 1995.

The site attracts nearly 15,000 visitors annually. The museum features a collection of 2,000 pieces, ranging from historical heritage to contemporary works. Visitors can observe the traditional skills of glassmakers and cutters through guided or free tours of the hot and cold workshops.

The village's architectural heritage is also notable, specifically the neo-Romanesque pink sandstone church built between 1897 and 1902. Known as the ‘little cathedral of the Pays de Bitche’, the church features unique crystal lighting, including chandeliers and candelabras, all crafted by the local crystalworks.
