Saint-Louis river resources face increasing environmental pressure

The relationship between the residents of Saint-Louis and the Senegal River is deteriorating due to environmental and anthropogenic pressures. Experts note that while the river remains vital for water supply, agriculture, fishing, and ecological balance, it is increasingly subject to pollution, salinization, erosion, and the impacts of climate change.

Professor Abdoul Sow observes that the river, once viewed as a primary source of sustenance, is now often used without respect, with waste being dumped into the water and riverbanks being occupied by constructions that ignore natural water flow. Bourry Kâ, head of the Saint-Louis water resources brigade, emphasizes that the river is essential for the city's daily needs and economic activities, yet areas such as Guet-Ndar and the Langue de Barbarie remain particularly vulnerable.

To address these challenges, experts suggest integrating water management into urban development. Potential solutions include better organization of fishing landings and promoting sustainable activities such as navigation, tourism, and river-based leisure to re-establish a functional connection with the river.
