Saint-Martin schools receive seismic risk awareness training

The French Red Cross conducted a “Semaine Sismik” (Seismic Week) from October 12 to 16 in eight schools across Saint-Martin to raise awareness about earthquake risks among primary school students.

These workshops, held in schools identified as high-risk by the Direction de l'Environnement, de l'Aménagement et du Logement (DEAL), teach children how to react before, during, and after a tremor. The initiative aims to turn students into safety ambassadors for their families.

Due to the island's high seismic vulnerability, a local project involves the demolition and reconstruction of several schools, including Marie-Amélie Leydet and Élie Gibs, with completion expected between 2029 and 2030. The estimated cost for these operations is 25 million euros.
