Saint Matthew: Feast day of the apostle and evangelist
September 21 marks the feast day of Saint Matthew, an apostle and evangelist of Jesus Christ. According to biblical accounts, Matthew, also known as Levi, was a tax collector in Capernaum before being called by Jesus to follow him. His transition from a despised profession to a disciple is a central theme in Christian tradition, often highlighted by the Gospel passage where Jesus states, “I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
Matthew is traditionally credited with writing the Gospel of Matthew, which was likely composed for a Jewish-Christian audience to demonstrate that Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. Historical and religious traditions suggest he preached in Judea and potentially Ethiopia, where he is believed to have been martyred. His relics are notably preserved in the crypt of the Salerno Cathedral in Italy.
Cultural and artistic depictions of his calling, such as Caravaggio’s famous painting, continue to influence religious art. In various traditions, Saint Matthew is recognized as the patron saint of bankers, tax collectors, and customs agents.
