Saint Maurice and the Theban Legion commemorated on September 22
September 22 marks the commemoration of Saint Maurice and his companions, Christian soldiers of the Theban Legion. According to tradition, Maurice, an African commander in the Roman army, led his legion through Italy and into the Alpine region. The group was reportedly martyred at Agaunum, in present-day Saint-Maurice, Switzerland, after refusing to participate in pagan sacrifices or persecute other Christians under the orders of Emperor Maximian.
Historically, the memory of Maurice has been celebrated since the 4th century, and he remains one of Europe’s most venerated military saints.
Other notable historical events occurring on this date include the 1776 execution of American Continental Army officer Nathan Hale by British forces in New York, and the birth of rock icon Joan Jett.
