Saint Maximus the Confessor feast day observed in Orthodox tradition

The Orthodox Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Maximus the Confessor on August 13. Born around 580 AD in Constantinople, Maximus was a highly educated figure who studied theology, philosophy, and the natural sciences.

After serving as an assistant to Emperor Heraclius, Maximus transitioned to a monastic life at the Chrysopolis monastery. He became a prominent theologian, known for his defense of the doctrine that Christ possesses two natures—divine and human—and therefore two distinct wills in harmony. This stance placed him in direct opposition to the Monothelite heresy during the 7th-century theological debates within the Byzantine Empire.

In the context of modern traditions, August 12 and 13 are observed as name days for those named Maxim and its derivatives.
