Saint-Nabord commemorates US troops' Moselle crossing
Commemorations were held in Saint-Nabord to mark the 82nd anniversary of the American troops crossing the Moselle River during World War II. The events honored the soldiers of the US 36th Infantry Division who participated in the liberation of the region on September 21, 1944.
A ceremony included the inauguration of a memorial stele dedicated to Corporal John Lindsay, an American soldier who braved the river's currents to secure ropes for his fellow soldiers. The tribute was organized in collaboration with the association Men of Texas.
The weekend featured a historical reenactment of the river crossing using period-accurate vehicles and uniforms. Local residents also honored the bravery of two children from the era: Jean Hilfiger, who guided soldiers through the terrain, and Camille Valentin, who assisted a wounded soldier near the Cenzé bridge. Local schoolchildren participated in the ceremonies, performing the ‘Chant des Partisans’ to help preserve the historical memory for future generations.
