Serbian Orthodox Church commemorates several major saints

The Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers are observing the feast days of several prominent saints, including Saint Euphemia, Saint Cyprian of Kyiv, Saint Nikita, and Saint Dorotheus of Egypt.

Saint Euphemia, a 4th-century martyr from Chalcedon, is honored as a protector of women. Tradition holds that she survived various tortures, including being placed in a fiery furnace and a pit of venomous animals, through divine intervention. Saint Cyprian, the Metropolitan of Kyiv and a former student at Mount Athos, is remembered for his dedication to translating and copying holy books.

Saint Nikita, a 4th-century martyr of Gothic origin, is commemorated for his steadfast faith despite persecution by the Gothic prince Atanarik. According to tradition, he carried an icon of the Virgin Mary for comfort during his martyrdom by fire. Additionally, the church observes the memory of Saint Joseph of Timișoara.

In local folk traditions, these late September dates are associated with seasonal customs, such as the final preparations for winter food preserves (zimnica) and the cleaning of homes to invite peace and order for the coming winter.
