Saint Panteleimon feast day celebrated by Orthodox Christians

Orthodox Christians are celebrating the feast day of Saint Panteleimon (also known as Pantelija), a revered 4th-century martyr and healer. Born in Nicomedia, he was a physician who provided free medical care to the sick and poor, a practice that eventually led to his persecution and martyrdom under Emperor Maximian.

Recognized as the patron saint of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, his legacy continues through various religious traditions. In many regions, particularly in Serbia, the day is associated with specific folk customs: some believe it is a time to avoid heavy labor, while others view it as an auspicious day for starting new businesses or beginning long journeys.

Religious services, including Divine Liturgies, are being held in various countries, including Moldova, Poland, and Serbia. His relics are honored in multiple locations, including sites on Mount Athos.
