Saint Pelagia the Penitent commemorated by the Church
The Catholic Church commemorates Saint Pelagia the Penitent on October 8. According to tradition, Pelagia was a woman of great beauty living a life of luxury and worldly pursuits in Antioch. After hearing a sermon by Bishop Nonnus regarding sin and divine mercy, she underwent a radical conversion, renounced her wealth, and dedicated her life to the poor and to Christ.
Reflections on the liturgical day include the Gospel of Luke (11:5-13), which emphasizes the importance of persistence in prayer, teaching that those who ask, seek, and knock will receive. The readings highlight themes of divine mercy and the capacity for human transformation through grace.
