Saint Peter of Alcántara: Life and legacy of the Franciscan reformer
Saint Peter of Alcántara, born in 1499 in the Spanish town of Alcántara, is recognized by the Church as a significant 16th-century Franciscan penitent and contemplative. After studying at the University of Salamanca, he joined the Order of Friars Minor, embracing a life of poverty, obedience, and extreme asceticism.
He is noted for his rigorous lifestyle, which included frequent fasting and severe physical mortifications. His dedication to the strict observance of the Franciscan Rule led to the establishment of a new branch of the order known as the Alcantarines. Additionally, he served as a counselor to Saint Teresa of Jesus during her reform of the Carmelite Order.
Due to his practice of spending entire nights in prayer and meditation, he is regarded as the patron saint of watchmen and night guards.
