Saint Raphael the Archangel celebrated on October 24

October 24 marks the traditional feast day of Saint Raphael the Archangel. While the current Roman liturgical calendar has unified the celebration of Raphael with the Archangels Michael and Gabriel on September 29, the October 24 date remains a significant day of popular devotion.

In biblical tradition, specifically the Book of Tobit, Raphael is depicted as a guide and protector who accompanies young Tobias on a journey. His name, derived from Hebrew, means ‘God heals.’ During his travels, he assists Tobias in finding a wife and helps restore sight to Tobias's father.

Due to these narratives, Saint Raphael is historically invoked as a patron and protector for travelers, the sick, physicians, and newlyweds.
