Saint Rosalia: The life and legacy of the Sicilian noblewoman

Saint Rosalia (Rosalia de’ Sinibaldi) was a 12th-century noblewoman from Sicily, born into the Sinibaldi family, which claimed descent from Charlemagne. According to tradition, her birth was foretold to King Roger II of Sicily as a ‘rose without thorns.’

Raised in wealth and educated at the Norman court, Rosalia eventually rejected a marriage proposal to Prince Baldovino to dedicate her life to religious devotion. Seeking a life of solitude and penance, she fled her family home to live in caves, first in the mountains of Quisquina and later on Mount Pellegrino near Palermo.

Tradition holds that she lived a life of extreme asceticism and fasting in these remote locations until her death. Her passing was reportedly marked by a sudden, bright light that illuminated Mount Pellegrino, an event that deeply moved the people of Palermo.
