Saint Simeon Stylites Monastery reopens in Aleppo after 14 years
Syrian authorities have reopened the historic Saint Simeon Stylites Monastery in the Aleppo countryside to visitors following a closure lasting more than 14 years. The reopening was organized to coincide with World Tourism Day.
Built in the late 5th century to honor Saint Simeon Stylites, the site served as a major Christian pilgrimage center during the 5th and 6th centuries. The complex features unique architectural elements, including an octagonal plan, a geometric dome, and floral decorations. While it functioned as a military fortress starting in the 10th century, it has recently suffered damage from airstrikes during the Syrian conflict and the earthquake on February 6, 2023.
Local religious leaders noted that the reopening symbolizes a new phase for Syria and aims to revitalize the country's tourism sector, allowing pilgrims to return for prayer and religious observances.
