Saint Sophia and her daughters commemorated by the Orthodox Church
The Orthodox Church commemorates the feast of Saint Sophia and her three daughters, Faith, Hope, and Charity, on September 17. According to Christian tradition, the family lived in Rome during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the second century.
Sophia, a pious widow, named her daughters after the three theological virtues. The family was arrested for their Christian faith and ordered to sacrifice to the goddess Artemis. The daughters, aged 12, 10, and 9, were martyred after refusing to renounce their beliefs. Sophia subsequently died from grief while praying at their graves.
The relics of these martyrs are said to be kept in Alsace, France, and the feast is celebrated across various Orthodox regions, including Bulgaria and Greece. The day is also associated with the city of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, which bears the saint's name.
