Saint Sozont commemorated by the Orthodox Church

The Orthodox Church commemorates the feast day of Saint Sozont, a third-century martyr from Lycaonia. Originally a shepherd, Sozont became known for his fervent Christian faith during the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian.

According to religious tradition, Sozont entered an idol temple in the city of Pompeiopolis and destroyed a golden idol, distributing the pieces to the poor. To protect others from being blamed for his actions, he surrendered to the authorities and confessed his faith. He was subjected to severe torture, including being beaten, hung from a tree, and placed on fire, before ultimately dying for his beliefs in 288 AD.
