Saint Stephen I of Hungary commemorated on feast day

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Stephen I, the first King of Hungary, on August 16. Recognized as the founder of the Christian Hungarian nation, Stephen led the country's transition from paganism to Christianity during the late 10th and early 11th centuries.

Born Vajk to Duke Geza and Duchess Sarolt, he was baptized as Stephen by Saint Adalbert of Prague. Following his father's death, he established laws favoring Christianity, founded numerous monasteries and bishoprics, and invited missionaries from Bavaria and Bohemia to assist in the evangelization of his people.

Stephen received his royal crown and religious privileges from Pope Sylvester II, which helped secure international recognition for his kingdom. He was married to Gisela of Bavaria, the sister of Holy Roman Emperor Henry II. Throughout his reign, he was noted for his devotion to the Virgin Mary and his efforts to provide charity to the poor and sick. He died on August 15, 1038, and was canonized in 1083.
