Saint Thecla the Equal-to-the-Apostles commemorated by the Orthodox Church

The Orthodox Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Thecla the Equal-to-the-Apostles, a prominent figure from the early centuries of Christianity. Born in Iconium to non-believing parents, Thecla’s life changed after listening to the preaching of the Apostle Paul for three days and three nights. Following her conversion, she renounced her engagement and committed herself to a life of devotion and chastity.

According to religious tradition, Thecla faced severe persecution from her family and local authorities. She survived attempts to be burned at the stake when rain extinguished the flames, and she was later thrown to wild beasts in Antioch, which refused to harm her. After traveling with Paul and preaching the Gospel, she eventually settled near Seleucia, where she was known for healing the sick.

To undermine her influence, local priests and physicians attempted to disgrace her, but tradition holds that she was protected by a miracle in which a rock opened to hide her. She is remembered as a symbol of steadfast faith, courage, and missionary zeal.
